🛥️ Marine Electrification Momentum

How 28 startups are turning the tide on marine electrification

Maritime transport might not be as visible as cars on the highway or planes overhead, but it’s a climate heavyweight that’s responsible for almost 1 billion tonnes of CO₂ every year (about 3% of global emissions).

And without a serious pivot, that share is only set to rise.

The industry has long struggled to electrify, hampered by massive power needs, red tape, and slow shipbuilding cycles.

But the tide is finally turning. Thanks to advances in battery tech, charging infrastructure, and smarter energy management, a flurry of high-performance and eco-friendly alternatives to traditional fuel engines are hitting the water.

The result? Cleaner ports, quieter seas, and vessels that are cheaper to operate over their lifetime.

And investors are on board. In just the last few weeks:

  • MobyFly raised CHF 10.1M to scale its zero-emission electric hydrofoil ferry technology

  • Vision Marine Technologies secured $7M to advance electric marine propulsion

The next wave of marine electrification is already docking, so we’ve mapped out the landscape to help you keep up to speed.

In this week’s edition:

🚤 28 Marine Electrification Frontrunners

A new wave of startups often dubbed the “Teslas of the Water” are leading the charge of marine electrification.

From sleek electric hydrofoiling ferries that skim across the waves, to retrofitted cargo vessels cutting emissions, to AI-powered fleet platforms optimizing every knot of energy use, marine electrification is no longer a far-off vision. It’s here.

We unpack the latest milestones including historic crossings, latest trials, new top speeds, long range distances and the Founders behind each solution in this marine electrification cheat sheet.

🛥️ Meet our HackSummit Speaker: Sampriti Bhattacharyya, CEO and Co-Founder, Navier

With a background in mechanical engineering and robotics, Sampriti Bhattacharyya is building a next-generation maritime American company.

Navier pioneers high-performance, hydrofoiling electric boats that combine cutting-edge design with zero-emission propulsion. By leveraging an advanced foiling system, proprietary flight control software and electric powertrain, Navier is making clean, efficient marine transport a reality.

Next up, Sampriti joins us at the HackSummit on December 10-11th for a Fireside Chat to share her journey to build America's first-all electric hydrofoiling vessel and how breakthroughs in clean mobility can drive a more sustainable future.

Founded in 2019, Navier has quickly positioned itself as a trailblazer in electric marine transport, having recently raised $30 million from investors including Global Founders Capital, Treble, Next View Ventures, Liquid2 Ventures, Soma Capital and Precursor Ventures.

The host of the HackSummit is where else than Newlab in Brooklyn’s Navy Yard, a one-of-a-kind deeptech ecosystem housed in a venue dating back to the early 1800s.

The Brooklyn Navy Yard has played a pivotal role in shaping American history, from its origins as a naval shipyard that at its peak saw 75,000 workers on site to its transformation today into a dynamic industrial park home to 500+ businesses including some of the cities brightest builders and inventors.

At Newlab, a historic hub of maritime innovation, the conversation around marine electrification will be carried forward by pioneers like Navier, who are reimagining the future of waterborne mobility.
